Make your own electrolytes & save a small fortune

Credit to @themme_fatale for sharing this recipe on Instagram!

Let’s start with some quick maths…

This recipe:
Ingredients $84.93
÷ 450 serves*
= $0.18 per serve
~980mg sodium per 3.3g scoop

Popular pre-mixed electrolytes:
Approx. $68.00
÷ 30 sachets
= $2.26 per serve
1000mg sodium per 6g sachet

If you’re having one serve per day…

This recipe: $65.70 per year
Above unnamed brand: $824.90 per year

That’s a saving of $759.20.

*This recipe makes 300 serves, but you’ll most likely have leftover ingredients. If you use the products I’ve linked below, it’ll be enough to make roughly another half-batch.

Recipe

Ingredients

  • 750g sodium chloride

  • 117g magnesium malate

  • 115g potassium chloride

  • Whatever you like for flavour –
e.g. cordial, juice, Water Drops (see tips below)

One serve = 3.3g (approx. 3/4 tsp)

Tools

  • Large mixing bowl

  • Wooden spoon

  • Kitchen scales

  • Airtight jar/container (~1.25L)

  • Optional but helpful:

    • Sieve

    • 3/4 tsp scoop (see tips below)

Method

  1. Weigh ingredients and add to mixing bowl (this is where a sieve is handy because there will be lumps, especially in the sodium)

  2. Mix very well and ensure any leftover lumps have been broken up

  3. Pour into an airtight container or jar

Ingredients

Magnesium Malate & Potassium Chloride powders are available in places other than Amazon, but they are much more expensive. If you find them cheaper, feel free to let me know so I can update this!

Vital Zing Water Drops are just my suggestion — no affiliation, I just love them.

  • Black cherry and peach flavours both work SO well 🧂🍒🍑

  • They are gluten-free, keto, vegan, dairy-free, sugar-free and non-GMO.

  • No refrigeration needed and they have a long shelf life.

  • Recyclable plastic.

  • Grab a 500ml if you can, but the small bottles are great for your bag.

Tips

  • Without the portability of sachets I recommend getting a makeup bag or something similar and putting in there:

    • Little salad dressing pot of electrolytes

    • Little bottle of flavouring

    • Scoop

  • Drink from something you can shake or stir regularly — the mixture settles at the bottom and you might get a gritty shot at the end if not mixed well

  • If you are sensitive to histamine, be careful with flavouring that has ingredients that you might react to (e.g. citrus, pineapple, strawberry)

  • If you are on ADHD medications, be careful of adding anything that contains Vitamin C, or it might impact how effective your meds are
